Last.fm Trends: Black Eyed Peas Rock The Bowl

Last year The Who brought rock back to the Super Bowl, and stormed a short set in style. It’s Black Eyed Peas turn this time around, and expectations are high for what could be a career defining show.
Last.fm Trends takes a look at what they stand to gain from the set.
When The Who brought “Pinball Wizard,” “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again to Super Bowl XLIV they didn’t just impact on the 74,000 people attending. Listening figures on Last.fm for tracks “Baba O’Reilly” and “My Generation” jumped by around 25%, and many of their other songs saw a 10% rise in listeners between the week prior to the game and the week following.
That’s echoed by Bruce Springsteen‘s numbers in 2009, as he brought The E-Street band to bear on the half-time crowd.
This time around Black Eyed Peas will be bringing their show to Cowboys Stadium and an estimated 80,000 football fans. At the moment “The Time (Dirty Bit)” is riding high in their weekly charts, boasting around 18,000 listeners week-on-week since its release in November.
Since an initial rush of listeners it’s been steadily declining over the winter months. A successful show could see it jump back up the chart, possibly even impacting on the weekly Hype Charts if enough new listeners start giving it a spin.
And it isn’t just Black Eyed Peas who stand to gain; Christina Aguilera will be leading the national anthem and, as reported by WOMC, Glee will be following the Super Bowl with the most expensive episode in the show’s history. It goes without saying that Sunday night is going to be epic.
