It’s the day after a long, sugar-filled holiday weekend. And guess what? You still have all that candy around your house.

Keeping chocolate or other candy is easy. There is never a time when you don’t have a “chocolate emergency.” But what do you do with your Peeps–those sugary yellow and pink chickens and rabbits that just get stale and useless?

PeepShi (Peep Sushi)

It sounds sort of disgusting, but Grace Kang and company created an adorable way to make Peeps into something creative and appealing–all year long.

Here’s Kang’s hilarious story behind the PeepShi revolution:

The Peepshi tradition calls for certain deviations from the standard sushi-eating customs you’re used to seeing at, say, a sushi bar. Since Serious Eats has come to embody the contemporary Peeps revolution, I feel comfortable in providing a beginner’s guide to enjoying Peepshi. It can be a roller coaster ride of sugar, and let me just say that you never want to be the first person booting at a Peeps party.


  • 6 Peeps per roll, 1 Peep per handroll, 1 Peep per nigiri
  • 1 box of Rice Krispies Treats
  • 1 box of Fruit by the Foot


1. Slice off six 3/16th inch slices lengthwise from a Rice Krispies Treat (Please don’t kill yourself trying to get exactly 3/16 inches. There are more important things to worry about, like beheading Peeps!).

2. Execute six Peeps of your color choice by decapitation. Cut off more neck than you think is appropriate. If necessary, you can trim off more later.

3. Portion out a length of Fruit by the Foot slightly longer than the Rice Krispies Treat slice.

4. Flatten and elongate the Rice Krispies Treat slice slightly and shape it into a hollow circle. It’s okay if it breaks, just mold it back together again.

5. Take a Peep head and tuck it into the top of the hollow Rice Krispies treat cylinder. Use a toothpick or tip of the a knife to help get it snug.

6. Wrap the Fruit by the Foot strip around your roll. Some folding and nipping may be necessary to get the cleanest look.

7. Serve at room temperature.

Peep Waldorf Salad

Ever had a Peep salad? Well, now you can thanks to Terri’s Peep Hut, a whole entire website devoted to Peeps. Eeep!


  • 10 Peeps, whole, preferably pink or yellow
  • 3 just ripe bananas, 1/2 inch dice
  • 2 large navel oranges, sectioned, 1/2 inch pieces, and juice from one more
  • 12 maraschino cherries, halved
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped macadamias, or pecans, or almonds


1. Mix all the ingredients, allow to macerate for a couple of hours, stirring a few times.

Serve as dessert with coconut cookies.

Peeps in Paradise

If you are a little tense post-holidays, why not make yourself a boozy little concoction using the Peeps as your drinking buddies? Kate from Grin and Bake It has the perfect solution to drown your sorrows (and your Peep’s) in.

I fell in love with Blue Hawaiian cocktails at the Royal Hawaiian restaurant in Laguna Beach. These are amazing, one sip and you’ll instantly wish you were on a beach in paradise. The best part of this version is eating that sweet little garnish that has been swimming around in your martini glass. Peeps soaked in rum, now that’s something to be happy about.


  • 1 oz. light rum
  • 2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 oz. blue curacao
  • 1 oz. creme de coconut


1. Blend ingredients with one cup of ice in a blender at high speed.

2. Pour and enjoy.

To garnish, I melted a handful of chocolate chips in a ziploc, cut off the end and piped sunglasses on the bunny. I then cut a marshmallow to use as the floatation device – safety first, even with the Peeps!

Peep Stuffed Brownies

Thanks to the Baltimore Sun, we can stuff more sugar into sugar and have a great big sugary-feast! Your “Get Fit For Summer” routine starts…tomorrow!

Sarah Kickler Kebler quips about the “recipe”:

Calling this a “recipe” is really an overstatement. It’s basically a gimmick, but it’s funny, and it’s sugary, and it’s chocolate and marshmallow, so how can you go wrong?

The original recipe cut the Peeps in half and used only three. I had a ton, so I put in six un-beheaded Peeps. In the oven, they puffed up, as seen above, giving the pan a “zombie Peeps arising from a chocolaty grave” kind of look.

After they were removed from the oven, the Peeps deflated, and the marshmallow spread out. These were no longer cute; the Peeps no longer identifiable. But they were yummy, in an Easter-basket sugar-coma sort of way.


  • 1 box of brownie mix (+ ingredients listed on box)
  • 3 Peeps – cut in half (I used 6, not cut in half)


1. Preheat oven according to package directions. Mix brownies according to package directions.
2. Spray an 8×8 oven proof dish with cooking spray. Place 3/4 of the brownie mix into pan. Press peeps down into brownie mixture {1/2 peep per brownie section} Spread remaining 1/4 of brownie mixture on top.
3. Bake brownies according to package directions. Allow to cool completely prior to slicing.

Peep Turducken

Speaking of a good stuffing, have you ever had a Turducken? It’s a chicken stuffed in a duck stuffed in a turkey. Bringing the concept to whole new level of birdie goodness, the people at Asteroid are suggesting the sweet version of this delicacy.Time to get super creepy with some Peepies!


  • About 5 Cadbury Cream Eggs
  • About 5 Bird Peeps (Rabbit in Rabbit is just wrong)
  • One Giant Hollow Chocolate Bunny


1. As with traditional turducken, Easter turducken starts from the inside out. The core is formed with miniature Cadbury cream eggs.

2. Take an ordinary peep and make a large slit in the bottom, as deep as possible without going all the way through.

3. Stuff an egg into the slit, stretch the sides around it, and fold the peep’s tail down. Repeat with a few more peeps.

4. The outer layer finally makes good use of one of the more odious culinary travesties, the irritating hollow bunny. As a kid, nothing was more annoying that thinking you’d been given a huge block of chocolate, and it turns out to be empty. To get the egg-stuffed peep goodness into this abomination, first you must open the bottom. Anything worth doing is worth doing with power tools, so take a dremel and cut around the perimeter of the bottom.

5. Once the hole is made, stuff the now egg-bloated peeps into the bunny. Note that some hollow bunnies suck even more than others, and crack and fall apart really easily, so be careful. Once you’re done, put the bottom back on. The really ambitious might try re-melting the seam in the bottom closed with a crème brûlée torch.

6. Voilà, the loathsome hollow bunny is transformed into several thousand calories, as God intended. Many children wonder around Easter how it is that bunnies lay eggs. As a side benefit, Easter turducken illustrates clearly that this “theory” is wrong. Obviously bunnies lay chickens, which then lay the eggs. Mystery solved.

Peep S’Mores

The Peep S’mores at Eclectic Recipes seem like a super simple concept, if not a tad psychologically disturbing as you squash and burn those little sugar critters.


  • peeps
  • Hershey’s chocolate squares
  • graham crackers


1. Place graham crackers, chocolate and a peep as shown in first picture. Zap in the microwave until soft. (Or place under broiler.) Top with another graham cracker square.

Or burn them over a campfire!

Easter Lemon Peeps De Creme

Are you a gourmand and would like to make something, ahem, sophisticated with marshmallow chickens and bunnies? Gourmet Sleuth has an option for your discerning palate that apparently goes well with Pistachio Lemon Shortbread.


  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1 whole egg
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 1/4 c. heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon grated Meyer lemon rind
  • 1/2 cup Meyer lemon juice
  • Additional 1/2 cup whipping cream for garnish
  • Sugar peeps for decoration


1. Preheat oven to 325

2. Whisk lemon juice, sugar, egg, egg yolks together. Whisk in the cream until the sugar dissolves. Pass the mixture through a strainer; stir in the lemon rind.

3. Place 6 – 3/4 cup pot de creme cups, or (soufflé, or custard cups) in a large roasting pan. Divide the mixture evenly into the cups. Pour enough hot water in the pan to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Cover the pan with aluminum foil. Place in oven and bake until the custard is just set around the edges, approximately 35 minutes.

4. Remove the pan from the oven. Remove dishes from the pan and allow them to cool. Then, cover and chill in refrigerator at least 2 hours and as long as overnight.

5. Beat the remaining whipping creme until soft peaks form. Spoon one tablespoon of whipped cream atop each pot de creme. Place one “peep” in the cream to hold it upright.

This really requires no recipe beyond the basic cappuccino recipe. Honestly, we out a Peep in a cappuccino this morning and it was delicious! It was kind of like the Peep was in a really relaxing, but fatal hot tub.

Or if you are lazy like us, you can pop into your local Starbucks, get a tall cappuccino, and throw a Peeps on top!

Sweet Peeps Casserole

Also from Terri’s Peep Hut is probably the most common sense recipe (besides the s’more) we’ve seen as of yet. A sweet potato casserole using Peeps instead of marshmallows. Brilliant!


  • 1 pack of Marshmallow Peeps Christmas Trees or Snowmen
  • 5 sweet potatoes, sliced
  • 2 cups margarine
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon


1. Preheat over to 350 degrees.
2. Place sweet potatoes in a large saucepan with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil and cook until tender (about 15 minutes).
3. Remove potatoes from heat, drain and mash.
4. Place mashed sweet potatoes in large bowl, and use an electric mixer to blend with margarine, brown sugar, orange juice and cinnamon.
5. Spread evenly into a 9″ x 13″ baking dish. Top with Marshmallow Peeps Holiday Shapes.
6. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until heated through and marshmallows are puffed and toasted.

Peep & Wine Pairing

And something we never, ever thought about: Pairing your Peeps with wine. Well, we’ve done it before, just not “officially.” Wine Monger has a list of the perfect wines to pair with “chocolate bunnies and peeps.” This is about as grown-up with Peeps you can get!

Well, no discussion of Easter foods would be complete without a nod to these two fellows: the chocolate bunny and the marshmallow peep. So what wine does one pair with chocolate and marshmallow? Why, a sweet dessert wine of course.

But not just any dessert wine: we wanted something perfect, and we found it. For the chocolate bunnies, pair the Heiss Traminer Ice Wine. The Traminer grape is known for its intense rose notes, which will pair perfectly with the chocolate, while the zip that remains in a well-made true Ice Wine will keep the whole pairing from getting too sweet or cloying. And when celebrating Spring, isn’t a thawed bit of Ice Wine the perfect idea?

For your marshmallow peeps, we recommend a dessert wine made from Muscat-Ottonel. Again, it’s the big aromatics in play here that will pair wonderfully with the subtle flavors and sweetness of the marshmallow. Two to choose from: Velich Muscat-Ottonel Beerenauslese 2001 or the Pasler Muscat-Ottonel Trockenbeerenauslese 2002. These wines also work great with those other Easter basket favorites: Jelly Beans!
