Music Video Premiere: Lady Gaga Hangs Off The Edge Of Fire Escape In ‘Edge Of Glory’ Video

Ex-theatre student, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady Gaga[/lastfm], has an obvious penchant for theatrics.

Usually this thrills our drama-loving diva hearts, but Gaga’s both blatant and boring allusions to musicals and other musicians in her new “Edge of Glory” video can’t be overshadowed by its contrived simplicity.

“Edge of Glory” already takes elements of Bruce Springsteen’s music, but the video evokes Romeo and Juliet-esque scenes like in West Side Story and the musical Rent mixed with a dash of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Michael Jackson[/lastfm]’s “Billie Jean” and ’80s film St. Elmo’s Fire.

All this and nothing really happens in the video.

Most of Lady Gaga’s lyrical yearning and (increasingly improved) dance work is done on a fire escape, where she is standing outside a window with a “red light.”

Perhaps telling us that although she is in relative safety while on the fire escape, she can’t wait to make her way into the fires of “lust” and “Put on my shades/’cuz I’ll be dancing in the flames.”

Gaga looks good and we like the close-ups of her face, but really, the video is boring and way too evocative of past pop culture.

It’s not surprising the video seems to have no cohesive theme since Gaga reportedly had problems with the original video director, Joseph Kahn, denying that he actually directed the video.

In our opinion, Mama Monster might be multi-talented, but she should leave the music video directing to the professionals.
