A recent episode of Glee had Darren Criss and Matt Bomer singing Gotye’s hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Unfortunately, Gotye, whose real name is Wally de Backer, didn’t care for the Glee rendition.
He said, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.”
He also added, “It made it sound dinky and wrong.”
I thought the Glee version was pretty good. It was definitely the highlight of that episode. But in Gotye’s eyes, I guess that doesn’t say much. He shouldn’t complain though, because after the episode of Glee, and his performance on SNL, “Somebody That I Used To Know” shot up to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Hey, don’t they say, no publicity is bad publicity? Yeah, thought so.
You make the decision, was the Glee version “dinky and wrong?”
