Beyoncé Breaks Silence On Cuba Trip Controversy: ‘It Was Quite Shocking’

While Jay-Z wrote the scathing “Open Letter” in response to all the critics questioning the legitimacy of his trip to Cuba, Beyoncé chose to stay quiet. That is, until now.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Beyoncé admitted that she found the uproar over her trip “quite shocking.”

“You know, it was such a beautiful trip,” she said. “I met some incredible children. I visited some incredible entrepreneurs. And it was really, it was really educational for me. I learned so much about so many people and the country. It was actually quite shocking.”

In conjunction with their five-year marriage anniversary last month, the couple visited the Communist-ruled country. Government officials were soon investigating to see if the two had violated the United States’ 51-year embargo that prohibits American citizens from visiting the country for purely tourist reasons. Less than a week later, it was confirmed by the U.S. Treasury Department that the trip was “fully licensed.”

In the interview, Beyoncé also noted that she finds all the media scrutiny over her life a little overwhelming. Bey explained that even though she’s famous, she’s really “the same exact person” she’s always been. “I like the simple things,” she explained.
