Ruben Studdard To Compete On ‘The Biggest Loser’
Ruben Studdard was able to win over America’s hearts as the champion on season 2 of American Idol, and now “The Velvet Teddy Bear” is set on winning the battle of the bulge by becoming the first ever celebrity to compete on the hit weight loss show, The Biggest Loser, this fall.
The 34-year-old singer will compete on the 15th season of the extreme weight loss show in effort to tackle his obesity and adopt a healthier lifestyle, reports CBS News.
Studdard will join fellow contestants at the Biggest Loser Ranch outside of Los Angeles to work off the weight week by week with intense training from fitness experts Bob Harper, Dolvett Quince and Jillian Michaels.
In the past, Studdard has opened up about his weight loss struggles, talking about all of the different types of diets he’s been on. But with each one he’s seen limited results.
Studdard successfully shed off a few pounds during his marriage to Surata Zuri McCants, but gained much of it back after the couple divorced in 2012.
While Studdard has said in the past that he’s never had an issue with his size, he said in a 2006 interview with The Today Show that his family history had motivated him to seek a healthier lifestyle.
“On both sides of my family, I have a history of diabetes and high blood pressure and things of that nature. I just wanted to basically combat those issues at an early age. They’ve never been an issue for me, but I wanted to do it while I was still young and felt like working out and looking great,” he explained.
You can follow Studdard’s weight-loss progress when the new season of The Biggest Loser premieres October 8 on NBC.
