Janelle Monáe Heads to ‘Rio’ With New Song ‘What Is Love’

By Annie Reuter

Its been less than a year since Janelle Monáe released her standout album, The Electric Lady, and now she’s back with new music. The singer just dropped “What Is Love,” which will also be featured on the Rio 2 soundtrack.

“What good is love, if it’s not your love,” she sings above a pop-Island beat. This follows in Pharrell‘s footsteps, placing a deliriously positive song in the soundtrack of an animated movie. Will this spell the same kind of success as it did for “Happy”? From the sounds of it, most definitely.

In other Monáe news, the singer recently covered Robert Palmer’s 1988 hit “Simply Irresistible.” She puts her unique spin on the track, which was originally recorded for E!’s “Live from the Red Carpet” on Sunday’s Academy Awards.
