Maroon 5 Finally Find More Than a Friend in ‘It Was Always You’

By Kevin Rutherford

As Maroon 5 continues to promote lead single “Maps,” the five-piece is already prepping single No. 2 — in this case, “It Was Always You.”

The track, released today (July 29) as a promotional single, continues the band recent penchant for mid-tempo, slow-burning tunes, somewhat in the vein of “Maps.”

However, “It Was Always You” differs in multiple ways — the intro recalls previous single “Love Somebody” from Overexposed, the production and instrumentation slightly ’80s-leaning, with electronic blips surfacing throughout.

“It was always you / Can’t believe I couldn’t see it all this time,” frontman Adam Levine sings, chronicling a friendship that is slowly turning into something more — even though the person’s been under his nose the entire time.
