Hamilton Creator Sings ‘Annie’ with Steve Martin, Andrew Lloyd Webber

By Hayden Wright

Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda has enamored the public with his free #Ham4Ham sets outside Hamilton‘s Broadway theater and captured the same magic outside the Tony Awards last night. He joined Steve Martin, Sara Bareilles, Edie Brickell and theater legend Andrew Lloyd Webber for a joyful version of “Tomorrow” from Annie. Bareilles sang lead with Miranda backing her up, Webber on tambourine and Martin holding down the fort with his signature banjo. Watch the clip here.

Hamilton walked away with 11 prizes last night including Best Musical and awards for acting, tech, composition and choreography. During the musical’s performance, performers left their musket props backstage in tribute to victims of the shooting in Orlando. Host James Corden’s somber opening similarly saluted innocent victims of the gun violence tragedy in Florida, which claimed more than 50 lives and even more injuries.

Accepting his award for Best Original Score, Miranda delivered a sonnet on the tragedy:

“My wife’s the reason anything gets done
She nudges me towards promise by degrees
She is a perfect symphony of one
Our son is her most beautiful reprise.
We chase the melodies that seem to find us until they’re finished songs and start to play
When senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day.
This show is proof that history remembers
We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger
We rise and fall and light from dying embers remembrance that hope and love last forever.
Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside
I sing Vanessa’s symphony. Eliza tells her story. Fill the world with music, love and pride.”
