Miguel Drops Emotional Track ‘How Many’ about Police Brutality

"How many black lives, how many black lives?/ How many heartbeats turned into flatlines?"

While some artists have taken to social media to share their reactions and thoughts about the week’s police shootings and the violence in Dallas, Miguel went a different route. The singer posted a new song reacting to the number of black lives lost, and questioning how things are ever going to change.

The bare song features only a futuristic synth and beat against which Miguel’s pained voice stands tall. “I’m tired of human lives turn into hashtags and prayer hands/ I’m tired of watching these murderers get off,” he sings in the opening measures.

Shortly after the 2 minute mark, things swell into a more powerful rhythm. His chorus strikes directly at the problem. “How many black lives, how many black lives?/ How many heartbeats turned into flatlines?” he sings.

He wrote in a message accompanying the post, “This version was started (written/recorded) here in London in my hotel room between the hours of 4am and around 7am when i passed out. ill update this song every week until its complete. Please feel free to share. #blacklives matter.”
