Jason Mraz has been releasing radio hits for the past 12 years, but the very first time he heard his debut single “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” on the radio he felt out of place. On the other side of the world in Australia, Mraz was also driving on the other side of the road in a station wagon when he heard his song for what he calls a “surreal experience.”
For his fifth studio album, Jason Mraz teamed up with his friends in the all-female folk group, Raining Jane, and decided to go acoustic. It’s these women, who Mraz says encouraged him to try a little tenderness on his new album, dubbed YES! and out July 15.
“['Rough Water'] features the one and only Jason Mraz. I’m stoked to finally get to work with him, I’ve been a fan of his forever,” Travie McCoy said.
“We talked about collaborating, he emailed me a song he was in the process of working on, I lent my two cents, all by email. Then a couple of months later, we found ourselves appearing on each other’s stages.”
In the Shane Drake-directed clip, Hayes and Mraz are featured in a park sitting solo on benches as everyone around them is coupled up.
While “Rough Water” doesn’t quite embody the anthemic feel of “Billionaire,” it does have some “oh-oh-oh’s” and a few zeitgeist-y lines for the kids.
